PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has moved up two spots in terms of global competitiveness. According to data from the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report 2017-2018, Malaysia is now in 23rd place out of 137 countries, up two ranks from 25th place in the previous year’s report.

Two of Malaysia’s cities have been listed in the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) Rankings 2016. The GaWC world-class city ranking system is the world’s most authoritative city ranking. Kuala Lumpur was listed in the first-tier ranks amongst other cities such as Sydney, Frankfurt, Seoul, Los Angeles and others. In a news report by The China Press , Johor Bahru was listed amongst the top fourth-tier cities in the world by GaWC.

Five Malaysian universities listed among the world’s top 300 best universities.
Reported in The New Straits Times and The Star, five Malaysian universities has made the top 1% of universities worldwide in the world ranking list for the year 2017/2018 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The listed universities are University Malaya (114th), Universiti Putra Malaysia (229th). Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (230th), University Teknologi Malaysia (253th) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (264th).
“The Ministry of Higher Education is confident that the strategic plans outlined in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 will allow our universities to be among the world’s best 100 universities earlier than expected,” said the Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

Malaysian cities among the cheapest in the world for expatriates.
According to reports from The Star and The Malay Mail online, Malaysian cities have maintain their position as among the cheapest in the world for expatriates. It was also mentioned that the cost of living gap between Malaysia and Singapore has widened over the last 12 month. This year in the region, KL ranked 54th most expensive country compared to Singapore which ranked 10th. “Cities in Malaysia continue to rank amongst those with the lowest cost of living for international assignees in the world, and have even become marginally cheaper over the past five years,” stated Lee Quane, Regional Director – Asia ECA International.

According to reports by The Star, The Malay Mail Online and Sin Chew Daily Malaysia has been ranked the most popular destination with global Muslim travelers for third year by the Mastercard Crescent Rating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2017. The respondents ranked Malaysia ahead of 130 other major nations at 82.5 follow by the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia respectively. According to the research, the Muslim travel market is expected to grow a further US$80bil (RM346.4bil) to reach US$300bil (RM1.3 trillion) by 2026.

Malaysian passport ranked 4th most powerful in the world.
The Malaysian passport is ranked the fourth most powerful in the Global Passport Power Rank 2017 by a financial advisory firm, Arton Capital – reported by The Sun Daily. Malaysia is tied with seven other countries including Austria, Belgium, Japan, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland which provides its holders visa-free access to 156 countries. The Malaysian passport has also improved its position with an overall visa-free score (VFS) of 156 from 154 and fifth ranking in January this year.

Malaysia ranked 2nd most competitive tourism destination among South-East Asia by WEF
According to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 by World Economic Forum’s (WEF) , Singapore topped the table among the nine nations in South-East Asia with Malaysia second, followed by Thailand and Indonesia.
Globally, Malaysia dropped one spot from 2015 to be placed 26th among 136 countries, although it improved on its overall performance from various indicators by rising from 4.41 points in 2015 to 4.50 in 2017.

MyIHAB, world’s first halal ecosystem solution
Malaysia has developed a system to fully integrate online registration and management system that further empower the halal industry.
Known as the Malaysia International Halal Authorities and Bodies System (MyIHAB), it is a fully centralised database under the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim)’s Halal Ecosystem Solution and first of its kind.
According to the New Straits Times, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was a starting point for Malaysia to move forward towards establishing an International Halal Accreditation Board in the near future.

Gurney Drive listed among “Best streets for tourists to visit around the world” by Traveller
Penang has made the tourism headlines again after Gurney Drive was listed in the “Best streets for tourists to visit around the world: 25 to see before you die” list by Traveller, an Australian travel resource.
Gurney Drive was in 13th place which is sandwiched by Hollywood Road in Hong Kong at 12th and The Dark Hedges of Northern Ireland at 14th.

Malaysia Ranked 4th Happiest Country in Asia
The Star reports Malaysia is now the fourth happiest country in Asia by the World Happiness Report 2017. It was also found that Malaysia is in the 42nd place among 155 nations, five places up from last year’s report.
Right on top of this year’s World Happiness Report was Norway who managed to jump into first position, followed by Denmark, Iceland and Switzerland.

KLIA’s immigration service voted world’s best by Skytrax
Malaysia’s airport immigration service has been named the best in the world by airline passengers. The Skytrax World Airport Awards, also known as the Passengers Choice Awards, ranked Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s (KLIA) immigration service as first in the world, beating Hong Kong International Airport (ranked second), and Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) at third place.
